Pony Up!
Make Love to the Judges with Your Eyes
Dim Mak CD

"I don't know what I want or what I've got / What's free is yours / I don't care if you break my heart."*

Montreal's Pony Up! is cool, calm, and collected. Make Love's chilly autumnal sound is inviting, and quite damn charming.

Dim Mak has been releasing some really cool albums lately (especially the JR Ewing swansong Maelstrom)—Pony Up!'s debut full-length is no exception. With infectious indie-pop rhythms and tons of sweet vocal harmonious bouncing atop of moody mellow gold keyboards, this all fem melodic-rock machine will make your ears submit to endless pleasantness.

Make Love is smooth and gentle, yet haunting and chilly. At times Pony Up! reminds me of the raw youthful pop-punch of Go Sailor ("The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die)"), the down tempo quietness of Slumber Party ("The Best Offence" and "Ships"), and the innocent spunk of Tiger Trap. But Pony Up! definitely glows with a sound all their own, even if it contains a familiar hum and melody that you think you've heard before. The best aspect of Make Love is its rich diversity from the first track to the last cut, the melancholic "Lines Bleed" that will cause you to curl up in a fetal position before the last note resonates to a silent end.

Make Love is a memorable release. It contains all the indie-pop melancholy that I found intriguing on so many of K Records' releases from the 90s, but it's those engaging vocals by Laura and Sara that stole my old-weathered punk-rock heart. Make Love will be my go to record to get me through this years autumn season.
